Local Track Update
July 9, 2009

The local interscholastic season is over, but several Islanders are still making waves.

Brianne Garcia of Our Lady of Good Counsel School, in her first-ever attempt at the discus, was a winner at the AAU Club Championships at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Florida. Garcia’s throw was measured at 63 feet, 1 inch.

Garcia will compete at the AAU Junior Olympics finals at the Drake University Stadium in Des Moines , Iowa next month.

The Spoto sisters continue on.

Amanda, already a star, a three-time Advance All Star and the reigning CHSAA champion in the discus, improved her discus best to 123-1 in mid-June. She also added more than three feet to her personal record with a 40-8 throw at the TAC NE Regional Championships.

Younger sister Brittany, about to join her older sister at St. Joseph Hill this fall, picked up a gold medal in the javelin with a 93-1 throw. Brittany joins Island champ Katie Dowd to form a powerful 1-2 punch in that event.

The sisters will compete at the National TAC finals next month in North Carolina .
