Three Track & Field athletes to be inducted into
Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame
The Staten Island Sports
Hall of Fame announced the class of 2009 this week.
Of the six
individuals selected three had strong ties to the sport of Track & Field.
These six will bring the total to ninety individuals and four teams that have
been selected to the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame.
Artie Evans who had a great career at St. Peter's HS and
at Manhattan College. He was part of a World Record two mile relay. In 1960 he
came within a whisker of making the Olympic team at 800M. Legendary coach Bill
Welsh said about Evans "the greatest half miler in Staten Island History". Evans
was honored at the Staten Island Athletic Club Triple Crown Dinner in 2000 to commemorate the 40 year
anniversary of this great accomplishment. Evans passed away a few years
ago.
Robin Jackson was the best women's short sprinter/long
jumper in Staten Island history. You couldn't open the Sunday Advance in the
1970's without reading about her championship performances. Coached for many
years by Joel Eisenberg, she jumped over 19' in the long jump...as a 13 year old.
Jackson went on to compete at Wisconsin.
Welsh said of Evans and Jackson "with their accomplishments they should
have been in the Hall of Fame a long time ago"
Lewis Sanders, known to most as a great football player
with several years in the NFL, had a great run in Track & Field in his senior year at St. Peter's H.S. Coached by Dennis Donovan Sanders not only set
several Staten Island sprint records but moved up to the 400M when needed and broke the 50.0 mark. He is currently
retired from professional football.
Congratulations to the three Track & Field inductees
to this years class. They join other great Track & Field/Running
greats Abel Kiviat, Bill Jankunis, Charlie Marsala, John Tobin, Pete
Whitehouse, Jeanine Radice, Billy Welsh, Lou Marli and the 1973 Msgr.
Farrell 4 X 880 Yard Penn Relays winner.
These individuals will be inducted into the Hall of Fame
in early 2010.
