Report #6 From Outdoor World Championships

BERLIN , GERMANY. - Just a few lines after the morning.

Erison Hurtault ex-Rutgers U. 400 man, running for Dominica, qualifed for next round of 400-he ran for Matawan HS on Jersey shore.

Shannon Rowbury got a lesson in international running- tripped, fell (I didn't see that part), but ran almost the entire race in lane 2. When the running started with 400 to go, she lost ground.

Anna Willard looked good- conserved ground on inside, and Christin Wurth-Thomas also automatically qualified. W-T led throughout until last straightaway. She's had luck breaking away after the 800, but that's in America. Almost the entire field was there with 400 to go.

Can we advance wome into the final? We shall see.

Cool, and windy here today. Good for distance running. Big women's javelin tonight.

German heroines Steffi Nerius, in the twilight of her career, goes up aganst Christina Obergfoll, the latest German sensation.

The hot women's thrower right now is Maria Abakumov of Russia, who threw 68.92 in the qualifying round, the longest of the year.

One US girl, Rachel Yurkovich, in final.

Czechs have a big thrower, Barbora Spotakova, the Olympic champ, and world-record holder. We Czechs have a good history in international competition.

The great Zatopek, the greatest JT thrower ever, Zelezny, Zmelik, Dvorak, and now Barbora.

Someone asked me the other day how many WRs I had seen. I don't count them- a lot. I only count mine the ones I've set. I don't get confused that way. By the way, my number is zero.
