Report From Outdoor World Championships

BERLIN , GERMANY. - Went to USATF press conference yesterday. Topic was the relays.

Men's coach Harvey Glance and women's coach Chandra Cheeseborough were questioned about the 4x100, which has been a disaster in recent years.

A mild surprise, but not a surprise if you really think.

Hurdler Terrence Trammel was added to the six-man 4x100 pool. The USA ran 37.85 in prectice meet without Tyson Gay. The question then became whether Gay would compete at all in the relay, since he is entered in the 100 and 200. That would be 8 races before the relay.

Glance said that the only way Gay would not run the final is if he came to him and sais, 'Coach, I can't run.'

The men's pool- Gay, Wallace Spearmon, and the four who ran 37.85- Trammel, Mike Rodgers, Shawn Crawford, and Darvis Patton.

The women's team appears to be more experienced-Lauren Williams, Allyson Felix, Muna Lee, Alex Anderson, Marshavet Hooker, and Carmelita Jeter.

Remember, in 1991, France had no runners ranked among the top 20 in the woelrd in the 100, but broke the world record. The USA had three of the top 4 all-time, and lost.

Both coaches have no problems with the talent- it's there, but can we get the stick around the track. That's always the question, and Glance especially stressed the mental and emotional aspect, saying that they've been having numerous meetings. I also hope they've been practicing.

Going into the stadium- the meet is about to start.
