“A Relay in the Making”
Wagner College’s DMR

Post a comment

On March 6, 2010, Wagner College Men’s Distance Medley Relay set a school record, running a fast time of 10:03.63. It bettered the previous mark set earlier in the indoor season at New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the New York City Armory. The race was run at the prestigious I.C.A.A.A.A. Championship, held at Boston University. The relay finished 12th overall, beating such schools as Boston College, LaSalle University, UConn and Yale.

The team was a vision of two of our current seniors: James Johnston (1200m leg) and Kevin Kearney (800m leg). Both young men were part of my first scholarship class at Wagner College. They joined a team that was in a building stage and needed leadership. From their first day on campus that is exactly what they provided.

The team truly came together with the arrival of Junior Derek Schultz (400m leg) and Sophomore Thomas Iannacone (1600m leg). Both of these underclassmen provided the missing parts needed for a truly successful relay team.

One of the squad’s goals was to qualify for the ICAAAA Championship and break the school record for the DMR. Like most goals you set, this was not a simple task. It took the guys three plus years to achieve this. But, the hard work the seniors put in throughout their years at Wagner have begun to pay off. Besides the DMR record, James has set two indoor records this season – the mile and 1000 meter run. Kevin has PR’d in every one of his events this season.

Though the team broke the previous record from 1982 by nearly 17 seconds, they only look to improve with the outdoor season. The team’s indoor time has put them in the running for the Penn Relays, where they hope to break the 10 minute mark and break the school’s outdoor DMR record.
